At present, there is no unified standard for the diagnosis of feeding intolerance (FI), and some industry associations define gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea in the process of enteral nutrition as feeding intolerance, but these evaluation indicators are mostly subjective judgments, lack consistency, and there is still considerable controversy about which indicators are included in the diagnostic assessment. A large number of studies have shown that disruption of enteral nutrition due to feeding intolerance greatly increases the risk of malnutrition in patients and is mightily related to poor prognosis and mortality in critical patients. This study will develop the core outcome set of feeding intolerance in strict accordance with the Core Outcome Set-STAndards for Development (COS-STAD) and Core Outcome Set-STAndards for Reporting (COS-STAR) developed by the COMET Working Group. The aim is to provide a clear, consensus-based minimum set of indicators that must be measured and reported to be applied to clinical research and clinical practice in FI field, thereby facilitating the emergence of more high-quality evidence and laying the groundwork for the future formal definition and classification of feeding intolerance syndromes.

The development of a feeding intolerance COS will consist of a mixed-methods study incorporating the following phases:
1. A systematic review on outcomes reported in feeding intolerance in adult critical care research
2. A survey of what doctors, nurses, patients and their families feel are important outcomes measures in feeding intolerance will be conducted in the form of questionnaires
3. A Delphi study to identify a set of core outcomes from those selected in the literature review and survey results
4. A consensus meeting to determine the final outcomes in the COS
